Winery of the Week: Marcology

As per the name, it's all about Marc at this tiny new family brand based in Franschhoek, where Irene de Fleuriot for many years has worked as winemaker for La Bri Estate. There, one of the focus grapes (in several top-rated variants) is chardonnay, and as it happens, chardonnay is the 'first love as regards to wine' of Marc, Irene's husband. He guides the styling, she executes, using fruit from a 5-star-pedigreed vineyard.

New-oak ferment & year ageing a double-edged sword for 2019 (4 stars, 86 pts): adds engaging buttered toast richness, spicy nut nuance to lemon & lemon thyme bouquet, but tad overt on peach & citrus palate. In also-tasted 2020, barrel now 2nd fill, wine more integrated, fresher, albeit shade less intense pear, yellow flowers & honey flavours. Touch drier & more vinous. More
