Winery of the Week: Strooidak

The exquisitely gabled NG Kerk on Paarl's main street, with a distinctive Greek cross plan and traditional thatch roof ('strooidak'), is among South Africa's oldest churches and thought to be the only one with its own vineyard - a tiny block of mature cabernet, tended pro bono by members of the congregation under the watch of an experienced viticulturist. The wine is made by a consultant and available in exchange for a donation, used for ministry work and upkeep of the buildings. Pre-booked tastings and church tours are offered, and a coffee shop and play area were being opened at press time.
