Winery of the Week: Berry Wines

With a surname like Berry, it’s only fitting that winemaker Thian (helicopter pilot and ‘business enthusiast’) and Elmarie (entrepreneur and food stylist) have a passion for red wine and have long dreamt of producing their own. They now source small pockets of grapes across Stellenbosch for their ripe and generous reds, two of them paying tribute to their family. The third acknowledges the unexpected (each year the wine may be different), which the family have learnt to embrace as a source of growth.

Berry Wines Kayla Cabernet Franc 2017

(87 pts)

Berry Wines range
Category: Cabernet franc

Bold & ripe 2017 has lots of intense fruit, more ‘red wine’ than varietal character, just a hint of leafy spice. Big tannins, firm acid still need time to resolve, but imbalance from 14.8% alc will need monitoring. More

Wine tasted by Tim James & Angela Lloyd.
