Winery of the Week: Gabriel & Gysbert

Generations of family and fellow farmers on the eastern edge of Robertson have grown top-quality fruit anonymously, and Elsenburg-trained Pieter Rossouw believes the time has come to showcase it and the shale terroir, ideal for chardonnay especially. On returning in 2017 from years making wine abroad, he started identifying the best blocks and launched the debut wines in 2021 under a banner honouring his grandfathers and, via the label artwork, a childhood quilt made by his mother. 'Less is more' and 'patience pays' are his watchwords, the latter also applicable to those who buy the wines, intended for ageing at least 5 years.

Gabriel & Gysbert Ijsland Chardonnay 2021

(82 pts)

Gabriel & Gysbert range
Category: Chardonnay wooded

Two vintages tasted, both from opposing windswept slopes. 2021 lemon & lime with aniseed nuance, harmonious oak & more restraint than 2022 (4 stars, 86 pts), which riper & more expressive, a honeydew & lemon meringue pie profile, plenty of buttery bâtonnage character. More

Wine tasted by Christine Rudman & Cathy van Zyl.
