Young Cape Winemakers Guild protégé and Stellenbosch University oenology graduate Rüdger van Wyk, winemaker at Jonkershoek’s Stark-Condé, has vinified his first wine under an own label here with backing from owner-vintner José Conde. That it’s a pinot noir is not surprising given Rüdger’s postgrad harvest in Burgundy. Kara-Tara is a river near his southern Cape hometown of George.

From Elgin & Overberg fruit, 2017 more New Zealand in style than Burgundy, with pure bright fruit to the fore on a supple acid/tannin base, new oak scaled back to just 10%, persistent dry finish. Doesn’t set out to charm or impress, but does so anyway, packaging inclusive. More
