Announce the Newcomer Winery of the Year 2021

Pilgrim Wines is this year’s star debut winery

While eager winelovers await the arrival of Platter’s 2021 in book form, the release of further “top performer” results from the tastings continue. This week’s announcements include the reveal of the Editor’s Award Winery of the Year and the Newcomer Winery of the Year.

This year’s Newcomer Winery of the Year is Pilgrim Wines. After more than a decade at Helderberg’s stellar Morgenster, Henry Kotzé has assumed cellarmaster duties at Stellenbosch’s Mulderbosch, where he’s been vinifying special parcels of wine for viticulturist wife Riëtte’s Pilgrim label, which includes SA’s first commercial bottling of trousseau, the Jura red variety officially known locally as bastardo do castello. One for the history books, as is the chenin, for a different and very special reason: its 94 points out of 100 on the international rating scale, and hence inclusion in this edition’s sought-after listing of Highly Recommended wines, earns Pilgrim Wines the prestigious accolade of Newcomer Winery of the Year.

Say Riëtte and Henry: “Pilgrim Wines started for us as a dream. Suffice to say that we never in our wildest dreams thought to be awarded Platter’s prestigious “Best Newcomers” award! This award will go a long way in validating our drive to keep on pushing, learning and will result, in turn, to teach, inspire and even surprise."

"Thank you to the team at Platter’s Wine Guide for your support in our endeavours and having faith in even such a humble operation as ours.”
