Delheim’s senior wine tasting room ambassador, August Pepe, has won a teaching tenure at the Cape Wine Academy after 13 years with the Stellenbosch estate.

August had been a shelf packer at Pick 'n Pay in Bloemfontein when he met Victor Sperling, Delheim viticulturist and owner-family member at a food and wine show. Showing interest in the estate and a wine-related career, August was invited to visit and was subsequently offered a job with the Delheim team as a tasting room assistant.

August left behind his home and family to start his new career with little knowledge of wine, working under the mentorship of the Sperling family, completing a certificate and finally a diploma with the Cape Wine Academy. Travelling opportunities to the London Wine Trade Fair and to California for harvesting surpassed what August had dreamed, and fuelled his passion for an industry he has made his own.

August conveyed his deepest thanks to "Papa" Spatz Sperling, Vera, Victor and Nora; Mignon du Plessis of marketing and the wider Delheim team for helping him to achieve his dream. "I look forward to sharing what I have learned about the wonderful world of wine with the students at the academy; thereby ploughing back into the community," August said.
