Up-and-coming Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge winery Creation Wines has appointed Werner du Plessis as assistant winemaker.

Du Plessis completed his B Agric (cum laude) at Elsenburg College in 2008, and went on to achieve a diploma in Cellar Technology in 2009. He also gained practical experience at top South African wineries such as Kaapzicht and Hazendal.

"To make good wine," the thirty-something says, "you need healthy grapes, passion, experience and a dynamic environment”, which is why he is over the moon about his appointment.

"At Creation I have the chance to learn about pinot noir, an opportunity I’ve never had until now. I also look forward to adapting to a different style of sauvignon blanc since the terroir is completely different to what I’ve experienced before.”

While regarding Creation’s terroir on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge as an inspiration, Du Plessis is also keen to learn from Creation's internationally experienced winemaker, JC Martin. “At Creation the energy and passion to create wines of distinction is contagious, to say the least!”
