The exclusive and innovative food-and-wine dinners launched last year by Platter’s, featuring bottlings from producers who have excelled in the guide alongside exciting cuisine, resumes on 6 April 2017 with a gala evening in the company of the guide’s prestigious 2017 Winery of the Year, Nederburg Wines.
The event is hosted by the publisher of Platter’s, Jean-Pierre Rossouw, and Cape Town’s five-star-graded The Table Bay Hotel, and showcases a selection of exceptional Nederburg wines elevated with specialised menus by The Table Bay’s executive chef, Jocelyn Myers-Adams.
Nederburg, one of South Africa's biggest and best-loved wine brands, has received the guide’s ultimate accolade twice – in 2011, when it accumulated a then-record five 5-star accolades, and 2017, with four 5 stars.
The Table Bay is acknowledged as one of SA’s leading wine destinations. Its Camissa Brasserie received the highest possible accolade, a Diamond Award, in the 2016 Diners Club Winelist Awards.
Jocelyn Myers-Adams says this year’s first Platter’s pairing dinner celebrates the exquisite interplay between food and wine.
“We are delighted to partner with SA’s finest winery for this event. The dinner will feature some of Nederburg’s Private Bin wines, which are available for purchase only at the Nederburg Auction. This makes it a most auspicious and rare occasion.”
The Nederburg Auction has been held annually since 1977, and is now one of the most important fixtures on the local wine calendar. Hundreds of wines are submitted for consideration by the selection panel. The invitation-only event stretches over two days to accommodate the various lots, split up into a range of sizes to accommodate small- and large-scale buyers from around the world. The auction remains the only channel used by Nederburg to sell its world-famous sweet wine, Edelkeur.
The award winning wines that guests will enjoy with a spectacularly orchestrated four course dinner are:
Nederburg Cuvée Brut NV served on arrival with fresh oysters;
Nederburg Private Bin D234 Sauvignon Blanc 2015 paired with the starter of fish carpaccio. This is a Platter’s 2017 5-star wine, as are the next three;
Private Bin R163 Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 with the first main of biltong-dusted beef fillet;
Nederburg Heritage Heroes The Brew Master 2014 accompanied with the second main of duck;
Nederburg Winemaster’s Reserve Noble Late Harvest 2015 with the dessert of chocolate mousse bomb.
As always, chef Myers-Adams weaves the flavours of indigenous plants and herbs foraged from the Cape’s natural surrounds into her dishes for a truly authentic South African taste experience. She hints that various aromas and flavours will be delivered through a variety of culinary methods, so expect an all-encompassing sensory experience.
The menu, created in close collaboration with Jean-Pierre Rossouw, has been approved by Nederburg’s cellarmaster Andrea Freeborough. Both JP and Andrea will be attending.
The cost per person is R650, inclusive of 4 courses each paired with a glass of Nederburg wine. To preserve the intimate and interactive atmosphere, seats will be limited and booking is essential.
