Entries open for Diners Club Winemakers of the Year

01 Sep 2016

Topics: Diners Club, La Residence Hotel, Winemaker of the Year, Young Winemaker of the Year

Entries for the prestigious Diners Club Winemaker of the Year and Young Winemaker of the Year awards are now open, and the clock is ticking down towards the announcement of these sought-after honours at a gala ceremony on 19 November.

Now in its 36th year, the aim of the Winemaker of the Year competition is to encourage South Africa’s winecrafters to produce fine-wine of ever-increasing quality.

The award is presented for the wine the judging panel considers to be the best in a specified class.

While other awards focus exclusively on the wine, the Winemaker and Young Winemaker awards also celebrate the skills, talent and dedication of those who actually make what’s in the glass.

The category for the 2016 Winemaker of the Year is Chenin Blanc, and producers from across the spectrum of styles and terroirs are invited to enter.

In addition to the winning winemaker, the top six finalists will also be announced.

The Young Winemaker of the Year award is made to encourage young oenologists to better develop their skills, express their individuality, and add to the future prestige of South African wines.

Now in its 16th year, the Young Winemaker award will be presented for the wine the judging panel considers to be the best in the category Red Wines.

Entrants may not be over 30 years of age at the time of the award presentation. In addition to naming the winning young winemaker, the top six finalists will also be announced.

Entries for both awards close on Friday 23 September, and the winners will be announced at a glittering ceremony at La Residence Hotel, Franschhoek, 19 November.
