For the first time, Platter’s Guide in collaboration with Cape Town’s five star The Table Bay Hotel is hosting a series of exclusive and innovative food-and-wine events, A Toast to Diversity, featuring bottlings from producers that have excelled in the guide alongside exciting cuisine.
Unfolding over four fascinating evenings through the year, the events will break new ground with unusual, even offbeat themes and flavour combinations.
“We’re aiming to explore new directions and even introduce some experimentation in wine and food through this series,” says Platter’s publisher, Jean-Pierre Rossouw, “and we’re sure to learn a good deal along the way.”
The series begins in May on a high note, with a dinner centered on Platter’s Winery of the Year for 2016, Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines. In contrast to formal wine events, this relaxed evening will take the form of a convivial family meal with Chris and Andrea Mullineux, and feature not only their wines but also some of their favourite recipes. The stellar bottles from this lauded wine couple will include some seldom-seen gems and five star treats.
For the second evening, in July, the winemakers will do the cooking – at least some of it. Four gourmand vignerons will compete in Masterchef style to make the best canapé, after which a four-course meal of signature dishes (prepared by The Table Bay) will be paired to top wines from these winemakers.
The third evening, in September, will explore the West Coast through the wines and food of the region. The format will be similar to a West Coast “long table”, with a focus on sustainability and foraging. Seafood and sauvignon blanc are sure to make an appearance.
During the fourth event, in November, the concept of terroir will be explored through wines made by far-flung and remote wineries, often with unique climates, alongside interesting ingredients and dishes from these regions.
