French-owned wine estate L’Avenir has opened a tasting and function area devoted exclusively to the locally developed grape pinotage.

Pinotage, along with chenin blanc, is the signature grape of L'Avenir, established in 1992 by the late Mauritian businessman Marc Wiehe and currently part of AdVini, a French group with an international portfolio of wine brands.

The new Pinotage Lounge, situated in the production cellar on L’Avenir farm outside Stellenbosch, provides pinotage enthusiasts with a dedicated venue to experience pre-booked tastings with winemaker Dirk Coetzee, as well as private events and corporate functions, and the opportunity to shop for rare pinotage bottlings dating back to the 1970s.

The venue opening, hosted by AdVini CEO Antoine Leccia, included tastings of recent vintages of the Single Block Pinotage and some of previous cellarmaster Francois Naude’s favourite vintages. Winemaker from inception till 2005 and a recognised pinotage pioneer, Francois relished the opportunity to share his experience of the "proudly South African" variety with function guests.

The Pinotage Lounge is open during tasting room hours and by arrangement for private functions. For bookings and more information email or call Hantie Smit on +27 (0)83-627-5551.
