The popular annual Calitzdorp Port & Wine Festival weekend is being extended and rebranded, and from this year will take place over a full month under the banner “Winter in Calitzdorp”.

“Visitors will not only be treated by our mild winter weather but will have ample opportunity to enjoy our champion red wines and, naturally, the flagship offering from our area, Cape ‘port’,” the organisers say.

Local wineries Axehill, Boplaas, Calitzdorp Cellar, De Krans, Du’SwaRoo, Peter Bayly, TTT and Withoek will offer winemaker-led tastings at each of their individual premises. Unusual food-and-wine pairings, some featuring port-style wines, will offered alongside many other festive events.

Calitzdorp’s climate is well suited to Portuguese grape varieties like tinta barocca, touriga nacional, souzão and verdelho, and the area’s ‘ports’ and other fortified wines are highly acclaimed, regularly garnering prestigious accolades such as Platter’s five stars.

“Calitzdorp is the ideal winter destination,” the festival organisers say. “Our days are mild and sunny, and when evening falls, there is little to surpass the enjoyment of a glass of Cape ‘port’ or red wine while enjoying the warmth of a hearth fire.”
