Winery of the Week: Orange River Wine Cellars: Kakamas is known for its peaches, especially the sweet sun-dried kind, but it’s also the source of Orange River Wine Cellars’ first ever sauvignon blanc. The vineyard of origin may be young, and small (less than 1ha), but it's vigorous, yielding a bountiful 20 tons! It's part of a massive five-cellar, 120,000+ tons-a-year operation spanning roughly 400km along the Orange River - from Groblershoop in the east to Grootdrink, Upington, Keimoes and Kakamas in the west. Their Reserve wines are showing potential (see the new unfiltered Bordeaux blend debuting this edition), while the ORWC range is the epitome of value and quaffability (with numerous Best Value Wine Awards). The marketing team rack up airmiles trading their wares as far afield as China but, they say, nothing beats returning home to a braaied Kalahari lamb chop or skilpadjie, a succulent liver parcel wrapped with caul fat.
